Bangladesh to observe August 15 as National Mourning Day

New Delhi, Aug.12 (ANI): The Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi will observe August 15 as the National Mourning Day to mark the 36th anniversary of the martyrdom of Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, with due honour.

 

A high commission release said on Friday that the day will start with the hoisting of the national flag at half-mast by Bangladesh High Commissioner (state Minister) to India. The messages of the President, Prime Minister and Foreign Minister will be read out before the Bangladesh community, including officials and staff of the mission.

 

A discussion meeting on " Importance and Relevance of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in Bangladesh-India Relations and Beyond" will also be held.

 

Chief Editor of the Sunday Guardian and eminent columnist M J Akbar, Chairman of Board for Re-construction of Public Sector Enterprises and former member of parliament Dr. Nitish Sen Gupta and Strategic Affairs Editor of the Indian Express Dr. C Raja Mohan will be the panelists with Bangladesh High Commissioner (state Minister) to India Tariq A Karim to preside.

 

A feature film "Bangabandhu : Forever in Our Hearts" will be screened at the Moitree Hall of the mission to round up the day.

 

A few dailies will publish special supplements marking National Mourning Day.

 

It maybe recalled that Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was assassinated at his residence on August 15, 1975 during an an army-led coup. Except for his daughters, who were abroad at the time, almost every member of the family was killed. (ANI)
