Srinagar, Aug 9 (ANI): The Kashmir Economic Alliance (KEA), an apolitical trade body, has called for a statewide shutdown against the rising inflation.
The government has introduced new taxes, which resulted in the rise of prices of basic commodities.
KEA has called for a statewide shutdown against the imposition of property tax, passenger tax, and hike in water and fuel tariff.
The government recently introduced the value added tax (VAT) and various government departments like Srinagar Municipal Corporation, and Srinagar Development Authority have also increased their existing service charge.
"People from different walks of life come together for the protest against price rise. Yesterday, the police used force to disperse the protestors. People belonging to the traders association and locals want to inform the government that we are feeling helpless due to the increase in price of basic commodities," said Bashir Ahmad, Secretary of KEA.
Meanwhile, Javaid Ahmad War, a member of tourist taxi owners association, said that the government has not paid heed to the needs of the Kashmiris since the past 22 years.
He demanded that Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee should take immediate action with an aim to combat inflation.
"Since the past 22 years we have been demanding our rights. Common people are facing a lot of problem. If the sate government does not come to our rescue then we would be devastated. We will loose our existence. We want the government to wake up and rescue us from this situation," said War.
"The Finance Minister does not belong to a particular district or a state, he is responsible for the entire country. He is also the Finance Minister of Jammu and Kashmir. We want him to have talks with our leaders chosen by the common people and find a solution to the price rise problem," he added. (ANI)
