Homage paid to Jodhpur temple stampede victims

Jodhpur, Mon, 06 Oct 2008 ANI

Jodhpur, Oct 3 (ANI): Residents in Jodhpur paid homage to the victims of the stampede at the Chamunda Devi Temple last evening. Around 224 people were killed and several others injured in a stampede, described as the worst ever in recent times in the country.

Former state chief minister Ashok Gehlot along with other residents observed silence for two minutes as a mark of respect.

A handful of devotees came to offer prayers at the temple and lamented the lack of facilities and administration in handling large crowds that led to the tragedy.

Officials said the crowds were especially large, as pilgrims gathered for the start of the festival.

The Rajasthan Government has ordered a judicial probe into the temple stampede. A retired judge of the Rajasthan High Court has been appointed to conduct investigation and submit his report in three months. (ANI)
