Srinagar, July 23 (ANI): Separatist hardliner Syed Ali Shah Geelani has called for shutdown here on Saturday to protest the alleged abduction and gang rape of a woman in Kulgam district.

The shutdown was also called against the arrest of Syed Ghulam Nabi Fai, charged with illegally lobbying the US for the Pakistan Government and its spy agency ISI.

The streets wore a deserted look with all the shops, business establishments, schools, colleges and government offices remaining closed. The public transport also remained off the roads during the shutdown.

Some reports suggested that she was abandoned by militants in the Army uniform.

Earlier on Friday, a senior army commander promised a 'dispassionate' probe into a recent rape case allegedly involving two army personnel.

"If there is any truth in this incident, then it is a criminal act against which the strictest action must be taken. Strict action must be taken if the allegations are proved true. I clarify that this is a criminal act," said Lieutenant General S.A Hasnain, General Officer Commanding of Chinar Corps.

The woman named Rukiya Bano earlier alleged that two personnel of the Indian Army had abducted and subsequently raped her on July 19.

Bano (30) had claimed in her complaint that at the time of her abduction, the perpetrators were wearing 'uniforms' and also had radio sets with them.

The local police registered a complaint and relevant First Information Report (FIR) yesterday on the basis of Bano's allegations. (ANI)
