High alert across Indian cities following Mumbai blasts

New Delhi, Thu, 14 Jul 2011 ANI

New Delhi, July 14 (ANI): A security alert was sounded across the country in the wake of serial blasts in Mumbai.

In Delhi, police personnel were deployed at public places like malls, cinema halls, parks, popular hangouts, ISBT and railway station.

In Ayodhya, police personnel carried out random checking of people and vehicles.

"People are being checked in all the places and those who are on the move are also being frisked. The concerned police official and his team are doing it. The magistrate and the police are on alert throughout the city," said Madhusudan Raizada, the Divisional Police Commissioner of the Faizabad district.

Security was also tightened in Varanasi, which had seen a powerful bomb blast at the riverside Ghat in December last year.

"We have also advised the people to be careful, particularly those who are performing religious duties on the riverside Ghats. They have been asked to extra take care of themselves. They have assured us of all possible cooperation," said G. K. Rai, the Commanding Officer of the Government Railway Police (GRP).

In Ajmer, security was tightened at the site of the famous Sufi shrine of Ajmer Dargah, which was once rocked by a bomb blast in 2007 that had claimed two lives.

In-charge of the local police station, Hanumant Singh Bhati, stated that their main priority was to keep a watch over the people who visit the shrine, as most of them are visitors from outside the city.

"We are specially checking the hotels and guest houses, and also the roads for suspicious objects, vehicles or even persons. We are checking it with utmost care," he said.

The three serial blasts rocked Zaveri Bazaar, a popular jewellery market, at 6.50 p.m. Another blast shook the busy business area around Opera House. A third blast ripped through the crowded Dadar area of Central Mumbai at 7.04 p.m. (ANI)
