Sania lands into another, this time for avoiding controversy

India’s top-ranked women’s tennis player Sania Mirza has once again landed herself into a fresh controversy but ironically this time it happened in her attempt of evading off-court controversies.

In a heartbreaking revelation on Monday, newly crowned Asia’s Numero Uno player, Sania Mirza disappointed millions of her fans across the country, saying that she will be boycotting all the domestic tournaments played in the country this year after battling a chain of off-court controversies.

Ranked 29th in World, Mirza, has decided to quit India's leading tennis event Bangalore Open, which holds a purse of £305, billed as the richest in India. “She was advised by her management to skip the next month’s tournament,” Sania said.

She said that it has become impossible to deal with the controversies.

"Whenever I played in India there has been some kind of problem so we just thought it was better not to play at this point," she said.

The 21-year-old, Sania, is the only Indian player to have won a WTA Tour event. She recently displaced China's Li Na to become Asia's top player after reaching the third round of the Australian Open last month.

“Controversies are the part and parcel of life when you are a public figure," said one of the country’s tennis legend Leander Paes, while reacting to Sania’s decision, who himself combated varied controversies in his illustrious career thus far.

"Celebrities in all walks of life have to face this kind of a thing, it’s nothing new.

It's about with what kind of pride you handle all this. The biggest thing for any sportsman is to play for his country and for its people," Paes added.

"It's an extremely juvenile decision that she has been advised to do. It is the fact that she's been so badly misguided," said Naresh Kumar, Former Davis Cup Captain.
