Srinagar, July 5 (ANI): Srinagar Sher Dil out played Budgam Badshahs to win the first match of the Kashmir Premier League (KPL) T20 tournament sponsored jointly by the Army and the state government.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah inaugurated the KPL in presence of GOC 15 Corps Lt Geneneral Ata Hassnain at DPS grounds here on Monday.
Inaugurating tournament at DPS, Abdullah said that better sports infrastructure and opportunities to young people to excel and bring laurels to the state is the priority concerned of his Government.
Batting first after winning the toss, Budgam Badshahs were all out for 98 runs.
For Srinagar Sher Dil, Amir took three wickets while fast bowler Mehjoor Ali claimed two scalps for 11 runs in allotted four-over spell to restrict Badshahs to a paltry score.
Srinagar Sher Dil chased the target without any hiccups thanks to a solid knock by Majid Dar who scored 61 runs to help his team win the match with six wickets.
Fourteen teams from 10 districts will compete with each other for the prestigious 'Chinar Cup'.
The Chief Minister also unveiled the glittering trophy to be presented to the winners of the tournament at its finale. The winner of the final will receive Rs. 5 lakhs cash award while the second prize will be of Rs. 3 lakhs, third Rs. 0ne lakh and the fourth Rs. 50000/-. Man of the Tournament would receive Rs. 60000/- cash award.
The best three players of the tournament will be recommended for training at the best academies in India.
The first phase of the tournament was conducted in May and June with 193 teams from across the valley taking part. There were over 300 matches at the intra-district level. The best 14 district teams were selected for the final phase. (ANI)
