New Delhi, July 5 (ANI): Sports Minister Ajay maken on Tuesday ordered the Sports Authority of India (SAI) to sack all foreign coaches, including India's Ukrainian track and field coach Yuri Ogorodinik, in the wake of the suspension of eight prominent athletes for failing doping tests.
Ogorodonik coached six of the eight athletes who tested positive, all of them women's 400-meter runners.
The list includes Asian Games double-gold medallist Ashwini Akkunji and her relay teammates Mandeep Kaur, Priyanka Panwar and Sini Jose, who won the 4x400 meters gold at the New Delhi Commonwealth Games and the Guangzhou Asian Games last year.
Maken also ordered the sacking of SAI officals, but ruled out the possibility of banning the tainted athletes.
He also announced a six-point plan to tackle the menace of doping and promised to look into the matter further.
The Sports Ministry has ordered the setting up of an inquiry panel which would be headed by a retired high court judge, and also asked for a detailed report from sports federations and SAI on the doping fiasco.
Officials of National Institute of Sport (NIS), Patiala, will be pulled up for their lapses as well.
The food supplements for the athletes are taken care of by NIS and Maken said that the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) will examine and track the movements of drugs and other banned substance in sports camps and training facilities.
He also said that the number of doctors and officials will be increased for all athletes in training camps and at the NIS, Patiala.
After the dope scandal had hit headlines, former athletes like Milkha Singh, Ashwini Nachappa had slammed the coaches along with the players. They were of the opinion that in such cases coaches also have their role to play and they should also be scrutinised.
Nachappa hinted that there was a nexus between the players, coaches and the administrators. (ANI)
