New CVC to be announced soon, says Sushma Swaraj

New Delhi , Sat, 02 Jul 2011 ANI

New Delhi, July 2 (ANI): Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Sushma Swaraj, on Saturday said the name of the new Chief Vigilance Commissioner (CVC) has been finalized and the government will announce it soon.

"The name has been finalised. Government will announce it. I have not raised any objection," said Swaraj, after a meeting with Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram to finalised the name for the post of Chief Vigilance Commissioner.

The high-level committee met at the Prime Minister's official residence in New Delhi earlier this morning.

The government had received over 50 nominations from various ministries, departments and individuals for the post of CVC following the ouster of PJ Thomas.

The persons, whose names figured in the initial list included Defence Secretary Pradeep Kumar, former Home Secretary G K Pillai, former Chemicals and Fertilisers Secretary Bijoy Chatterjee, former Secretary, Legislative Affairs V K Bhasin, former Urban Development Secretary M Ramachandran and Personnel Secretary Alka Sirohi.

The post of India's top anti-corruption watchdog has been lying vacant since March.

The Supreme Court had on March 3 set aside the appointment of PJ Thomas as head of anti-corruption body Central Vigilance Commission, even as it laid down stringent guidelines for future appointments of Chief Vigilance Commissioner.

The Supreme Court set aside the September 3, 2010 recommendation for appointment of Thomas as CVC as 'illegal' since the high-powered committee did not consider the pending chargesheet in the Palmolein import scam.

The apex court said that the committee's recommendation on appointment of Thomas "does not exist in law".

The committee, for whatsoever reason, failed to consider relevant material recommending action against Thomas, the apex court added. (ANI)
