India calls for 'satisfactory closure' of 26/11 trial in Pak

Islamabad, Fri, 24 Jun 2011 ANI

Islamabad, June 24(ANI): Satisfactory closure of the 26/11 trial will enable India and Pakistan to move on with the process of normalization of ties, Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao said on Friday.

Addressing a joint press conference in Islamabad with her Pakistani counterpart, Salman Bashir, Rao said: "The issue of 26/11 is obviously of critical importance for us. We have already had a very useful discussion between the Home Secretaries and the Interior Secretaries of the two countries. That meeting has had a very good outcome and I did follow up on those discussions."

"We did talk about matters relating to the 26/11 trial and the pending issues related to it and we had a good discussion on this matter. I have continued to underline and emphasize India's concern that we must have satisfactory closure because that will enable us to move on with the process of normalization," she added.

Meanwhile, Pakistan Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir said: "I think there has been good two way communications between the Interior Ministry of Pakistan and the Indian Home Ministry. We hope that these communications will result in something that is useful."

Earlier, a statement of the External Affairs Ministry had said that the Foreign Secretaries noted that both countries recognize that terrorism poses a continuing threat to peace and security and they reiterated the firm and undiluted commitment of the two countries to fight and eliminate this scourge in all its forms and manifestations.

"They agreed on the need to strengthen cooperation on counter-terrorism," the statement said. By Smita Prakash (ANI)
