Crisis-hit MV Suez crew shifted to PNS Babur

Karachi , Sun, 19 Jun 2011 ANI

Karachi, June 19(ANI): Egypt-owned cargo ship MV Suez's 22-member crew, which includes six Indians, was on Sunday transferred to PNS Babur.

According to reports, it comes after Pakistan's Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Noman Bashir ordered that the crew of the crisis-hit ship be shifted to PNS Babur on humanitarian grounds.

Whether the freed men would be brought to Karachi or Gwadar is yet to be decided, naval sources said.

Earlier, the captain of MV Suez, Wasi, had appealed to the Pakistan Foreign Office and Admiral Bashir for help in view of the vessel being caught in strong winds.

He feared that the ship would capsize along with the 22-member crew released by the Somalian pirates following 10 months in captivity.

Captain Wasi had told Geo News on telephone that strong monsoon winds were causing the ship to sway dangerously.

Besides Indian and Pakistan citizens, the crew also includes 11 Egyptian and one Sri Lankan national. (ANI)
