Mumbai, June 9 (ANI): Bollywood fraternity has mourned the demise of Maqbool Fida Husain, saying the celebrated painter's contribution to Indian art has been totally unprecedented and he will always be missed.

"India was his identity. He may have gone away but he was an Indian at heart, his art was pure Indian at heart. Needless to say he was an inspiration to many - young and old. He inspired many young people. You can see emulation and inspiration in their work," said renowned lyricist Javed Akhtar.

Actor Shabana Azmi expressing her grief over Husain's death said the prolific painter missed India.

"He was a prolific painter. He is someone who is born once in 100 years. I last met him through a videoconference. He was deeply moved when we told him we will try to bring him back to India. He missed India," she said.

Filmmaker Shekhar Kapur tweeted: M F Husain, who seemed ageless, painting till his last days leaves us with one of India's greatest legacy of art."

"Sad to hear renowned legendary artist M F Husain passes away," said Director Madhur Bhandarkar.

Meanwhile, actor and social activist Nafisa Ali said Husain was a very gifted genius.

"It's a regret that we'll carry on our shoulders that he was not allowed to come back. The misrepresentation of his art that people were pointing fingers at should now rest in peace. We'll hopefully remember him for more than his controversies," he added.

Bollywood actors Abhishek Bachchan, Rahul Bose, Arbaaz Khan, Siddharth and Chitrangda Singh also mourned the death of the legendary painter, saying Husain was a great genius, who will always be missed.

M F Husain, who earned both fame and wrath for his paintings, breathed his last at the Royal Brompton Hospital in London early this morning.

Husain was popularly known as MF and regarded as 'Picasso of India'. (ANI)
