Srinagar, May 31 (ANI): Rising at 359 metres above the Chenab River, the world's highest bridge is being constructed, as part of the under construction railway link project in Srinagar.

Undertaken by the Western Indian Railways Corporation, the rail bridge is part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link Project that aims to connect important regions in the valley.

International and national engineering agencies have also been roped in to facilitate the construction of the project, according to experts.

"The span of the rail bridge, which is being constructed over Chenab River, is 467 metres and its height above the river is 359 metres. International as well as national agency is also offering us recommendations on the construction of the bridge," said Chahatey Ram, Chief Administrative Officer, Northern Indian Railways.

According to the engineers, the wind speed at that altitude may go upto 266 kilometre per hour, so the signaling system has been installed in such a way that if the wind velocity is more than 90 kilometre per hour, trains will not be allowed to cross the bridge.

The construction cost in building the bridge will be around Rs 50,050 million and will also be painted with a special paint with a life span of around 35 years to protect it from the tough weather.

According to experts, the bridge once constructed will be 35 metres taller than the Eiffel Tower.

As of now, the world's tallest rail bridge is on France's Tarn river and its tallest pillar rises 340 metres while the actual height at which trains run on the bridge is 300 metres. (ANI)
