Lahore, May 29(ANI): Former Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has said that Islamabad and New Delhi were about to resolve the Kashmir dispute in 1999, when the then Pakistan Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Pervez Musharraf "opened the Kargil front".
"The Indian prime minister and I wanted to resolve the Kashmir dispute in 1999, but General Musharraf opened the Kargil front and then overthrew my government. After the nuclear tests, India had started treating us on an equal footing," the Dawn quoted Nawaz, as saying while addressing the Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) workers at the Aiwan-i-Iqbal to mark the 13th anniversary of the country's nuclear tests.
"Today no one is with us. When my government conducted nuclear tests, half of the world was with Pakistan. I do not say that no one was with India; there were countries with India also," he added.
Nawaz held Pakistan's military dictators- especially Musharraf- responsible for the current situation facing the country.
"Pakistan had become stronger after that [nuclear tests], but the subsequent martial law weakened it," he rued.
The PML-N chief said that the country would have been on the road to progress, had the people stopped military dictators from toppling democratic governments.
He also said that the democratic process should be given a chance till it gains strength, adding: "Mistakes can be identified and rectified in democracy." (ANI)
