Indo-Afghan pact inked on capacity building in information and broadcasting sector

New Delhi, May 24(ANI): In a major initiative to boost cooperation in critical sectors of Information and Broadcasting, India and Afghanistan today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for capacity building.

 

The MoU was signed between Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni and Afghanistan Information and Culture Minister Dr. Sayed Makhdoom Raheen.

 

Speaking on the occasion, Soni said that the initiative would provide a platform for development of media policies and strategies between the two countries.

 

"It would also enable the Afghanistan government to incorporate learnings of key policy initiatives taken by the Information and Broadcasting Ministry related to digitalization, self regulation, content management, innovative programming with regard to outreach programmes at the grass roots," Soni said.

 

During the discussions, the Minister gave an overview of the recent policy changes brought about in the broadcasting sector which enabled the growth of the media and entertainment industry in the last few years.

 

Meanwhile, Dr. Raheen in his remarks stated that the MoU would enable the Afghanistan government to draw a roadmap for media policies and strategies in the future.

 

The MoU signed between the two countries covers a wide range of issues, including development of media policies and strategies; development of independent and free press in Afghanistan; identification of areas of reforms and restructuring in the field of press and media and implementation thereof; and development and standardization of media related programmes, graphic designing, production of documentaries and films and other related areas.

 

The MoU has been signed in the backdrop of a range of activities conducted in Afghanistan in critical areas of information and broadcasting by the ministry. (ANI)
