Mumbai, May 18 (ANI): Mumbai Police on Wednesday claimed that Iqbal Kaskar, the brother of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim was not present at the spot, when gunmen opened fire in a South Mumbai area last night killing his bodyguard.
It was earlier reported that Kaskar was on his way out when four assailants, two riding a motorbike and two others on foot, approached his car and opened fire near his residence at Pakmudia Street in South Mumbai. When the gunmen started firing, Kaskar reportedly took cover and escaped unhurt.
Joint Police Commissioner (Law and Order) Rajnish Seth said: "Kaskar was not there at the place of firing last night. But this does not mean that he was not targeted."
Underworld gangster Chhota Rajan's name has figured in the initial investigation into the firing incident in Mumbai in which Kaskar escaped unhurt.
"Rajan's name has surfaced (in the firing case). However, it is premature to say anything now. It is yet to be verified. Just because Dawood and Rajan are rivals, we cannot hold the latter responsible for the incident," said a senior police official.
Meanwhile, Syyed Ali and Indra Khatri, the two arrested in the firing case were today remanded to police custody till May 30. The duo has been charged under Section 302, 34 of the IPC and Section 325, 327 of Arms Act. (ANI)
