Maoists torch nine tractors in Ranchi

Ranchi , Tue, 10 May 2011 ANI

Ranchi, May 10 (ANI): As a mark of protest against the anti-encroachment drive in Jharkhand, Maoists torched nine tractors at a community project site in Palamu region.

Sohan Kumar, a labourer said over 20 armed Maoists in black uniform came and torched the tractors.

Apart from the anti-encroachment drive, the Maoists were protesting against the arrest of three of their central committee members named Purnendu Mukherjee, alias Saheb, Umesh Yadav, alias Abhimanyu, and Nokhelal Choudhury, alias Suraj Shyamji in Bihar on April 29.

The ever-busy National Highway 2, better known as the GT (Grand Trunk) Road linking Kolkata with New Delhi and beyond, passing through Bihar's Gaya District presented a deserted look.

Dreading retaliation by the Maoists, the locals had rolled down the shutters of their shops, offices and allied establishments while the vehicular traffic had come to a standstill.

Travellers were seen waiting at bus stops as no inter-state buses plied on the highway due to the threat of a Maoist attack. (ANI)
