SC split verdict on Madani's bail plea in Bangalore blast case

New Delhi, Wed, 04 May 2011 ANI

New Delhi, May 4 (ANI): A Supreme Court bench today referred the bail plea of People's Democratic Party (PDP) leader Abdul Nasser Madani, an accused in the 2008 Bangalore blast, to Chief Justice of India S H Kapadia following differences between two judges on a grant of bail to him.

An apex court bench of Justices Markandey Katju and Gyan Sudha Misra said it was referring the matter to the Chief Justice of India for constituting another bench in view of differences between judges on the issue.

Justice Katju appeared to be in favour of granting bail to Madani, while Justice Misra was strongly opposed to it in view of the serious allegations against him that impinges upon national security.

The Karnataka Government pleaded in the court that Madanui's release on bail could pose a serious threat to national security, as he was part of the 'jihadi' element having connections with banned terror outfits like the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) and SIMI.

Madani moved the apex court for bail after the Karnataka High Court rejected his plea on February 11 on the ground that that if bail was granted to him it would put the security of the state and the nation in jeopardy.

Madani is presently lodged in a Karnataka jail under judicial custody for his alleged involvement in the Bangalore serial bomb blast and similar incidents in Ahmedabad, Surat and Jaipur.

He had earlier spent nine years in jail in connection with the 1998 Coimbatore serial blasts in which 58 people were killed. (ANI)
