DPS emerges champs in Hind Kishore tournament

New Delhi, Wed, 23 Jan 2008 Mukesh Thapliyal

A brilliant solitary goal scored midway through the second half by Daman Dutta helped Delhi Public School (DPS), Vasant Kunj to register a hard fought title victory over their spirited opponents Father Agnel Public School (FAPS), Noida in the finals of the Hind Kishore tournament for ONGC CUP played at the Ambedkar stadium here on Tuesday.

The all-important goal of the match came in the 45th minute of the play when Daman Dutta, after receiving a long ball, rushed past rival defenders on his own and neatly placed the ball from the top of the ‘D’ in to the net after watching on-rushing goalkeeper.

Both the teams opened up with the attacking gears and tried hard to surge ahead but couldn’t convert their fine moves into goals due to some poor finishing from the strikers of either side.

FAPS had a more balanced side as compared to DPS as they were launching much planned series of attacks in the rival citadel but couldn’t be able to convert the half chances into goals.

FAPS came close on many occasions in the first half itself but much to their dismay their forwards fumbled at the access way, while DPS agile forward Pranav gave the opponents a lone threat in the 23rd minute of the game when his long ranger hit the crossbar to deny his team a sure goal.

The winners pocketed a sum of Rs 10,000 while runners-up had to content with Rs 7000. Chief guest, Delhi Soccer Association President, Subhash Chopra alongwith Managing Director, Cosco India Ltd., NK Jain gave away the prizes to the winning and losing teams.

In addition 11 promising players of different participating schools has been awarded a scholarship of Rs 1000 and a pair of Campus shoes from the organisers of the tournament.
