Dharamsala, Apr 12 (ANI): Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, registered for the Unique Identification Card in Himachal Pradesh's Dharamsala city on Tuesday.
The concerned authorities here said the other Tibetans would be inspired from this and come forward to register themselves.
The census officials have counted Tibetans, living in-exile in the state, and citizens living in the region have been encouraged to register themselves for the Unique Identification Card.
Kangra Additional Deputy Commissioner P Mandal said that they are hoping to register all the Tibetans in the region in the next two to three months.
"We had gathered here to publicise and we were hopeful that the event would turn out to be very good, as people will see His Holiness registering himself for the unique identity number and we are hopeful that with this a lot of people would come forward and participate in this," he said.
The census data will be used by government to design welfare schemes and calculate what funds should be set aside for food and fuel subsidies.
The government will also use the census to issue a unique identification number to all its citizens and to target beneficiaries for welfare schemes, which it hopes will provide better access to such schemes and help it trim its subsidy bill. (ANI)
