Militants threat affecting telecom service of Manipur

Imphal, Sun, 03 Apr 2011 ANI

Imphal, Apr 3 (ANI): Frequent extortion demands and attacks on telecom company staff by militants is severely affecting the functioning of telecom service providers in Manipur.

Recently, a tower caretaker was attacked in Imphal. It was the second incident in Manipur where telecom employees were attacked.

On March 28, Keisham Basanta Singh, a caretaker of the Vodafone BTS tower installed within his residential compound at Kongba Laishram Leikai in Imphal East district was switching off a generator set when an unidentified person opened fire on him.

Singh is currently undergoing treatment at Jawahar Lal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) for a right thigh injury.

It is suspected that rebel Kangleipak Communist Party Military Council was behind the attack.

"After this incident, I feel unsafe. Now, I am even afraid to move out at night and resume my duty," said Basanta Singh.

"Neither my son nor me was threatened by any insurgent group before this attack. Keisham has just finished his law and is doing his MBA. I am still shocked that he was shot," said his father K Ravi Singh.

The incident has angered residents of the area. Womenfolk staged a sit in protest at the Kongba Laishram Leikai Club in Imphal condemning the attack.

"We really feel worried and are scared to lead a normal life. So we appeal to the insurgents not to repeat such kind of acts again," said Thoibi Devi.

Manipur for long has been affected by the unlawful activities of militants that continuously inflict pain and sufferings on the people. (ANI)
