Chennai flag manufacturing business hit by Election Commission rules

Chennai, Thu, 24 Mar 2011 ANI

Chennai, Mar.24 (ANI): Ahead of polls in Tamil Nadu, flag and banner manufacturers are facing huge losses due to the Election Commission's (EC) order directing political parties to use only one flag during campaigns.

Sales have gone down by almost 50 percent since the order was issued.

Usually, elections provide a lot of business to traders running shops that sell party flags, banners and festoons.

Flag manufacturers say this time parties were so preoccupied with seat-sharing arrangements, that they did not place orders for banners and flags.

According to guidelines issued by the Election Commission of India, political parties have been instructed to campaign with minimum flags and not to use flags on vehicles.

Tamil Nadu goes to polls on April 13. Three other states, Assam, West Bengal and Kerala, besides Pondicherry, will also be hold elections next month. (ANI)
