Nagpur, Mar. 12 (ANI): South African bowlers fought back strongly to bundle India out for 296 on Saturday in their World Cup fixture here.
India, at one stage, was on course to a massive score, with both Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag in tearaway form. Tendulkar scored his 48th ODI century (111), while Sehwag (73) and Gautam Gambhir (69) chipped in with contrasting half-centuries.
Tendulkar raced to his record sixth World Cup hundred off just 92 balls,hitting three huge sixes and eight fours. This was his 99th international century and second in the current tournament.
From a imposing score of 267 for the loss of two wickets, India committed batting harakiri, losing nine wickets for 29 runs in nine overs. The home side failed to complete its quota of 50 overs, being bundled out in 48.4 overs.
Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni watched on helplessly as his team mates trooped back into the pavilion one-by-one. He remained unbeaten on 12.
South African pacer Dale Steyn claimed five wickets.
At the time of the filing of this report, South Africa was 41 for the loss of one in the ninth over with Graeme Smith being caught by Sachin Tendulkar of the bowling of Zaheer Khan. Hashim Amla was at the crease.
The Group B clash is being played at the VCA Stadium.
