World mourns death of Sir Edmund Hillary

New Delhi, Fri, 11 Jan 2008 NI Wire

Edmund Hillary, the man who told this world that nothing in this earth is unscalable that every dream can be achieved, is no more. By climbing atop the mighty Mount Everest he paved the way for millions who believed in their dreams, 88 year old Hillary died after a heart stroke on Friday.

Born in Auckland , New Zealand on July 19, 1919 Edmund was fond of mountain climbing from his teenager age which placed him as the greatest ever mountaineer and adventurer in history.

His words which describe the greatest feat of his life, “Another few weary steps and there was nothing above us but the sky. There was no false cornice, no final pinnacle. We were standing together on the summit. There was enough space for about six people. We had conquered Everest.

“But my dominant reactions were relief and surprise. Relief because the long grind was over and the unattainable had been attained. And surprise, because it had happened to me, old Ed Hillary, the beekeeper, once the star pupil of the Tuakau District School, but no great shakes at Auckland Grammar (high school) and a no-hoper at university, first to the top of Everest. I just didn't believe it, he sounds humble.

This extraordinary feat in his life did not drive him crazy but instead he chose to serve the people of Nepal where he claimed success with Tenzing Norgay on May 29, 1953.

After touching this high adventure point he expressed: “To my great delight I realised we were on top of Mount Everest and that the whole world spread out below us.

A heroic figure who remained adventurous all through his life also led expeditions to the South Pole and the source of the Yangtze River .

He never accepted that he was the man who reached the 8848 metre Mt. Everest first but only after the death of Tenzing Norgay he broke his silence.

His two autography Nothing Venture, Nothing Win and View from the Summit , describes his life philosophy and expedition at length.

The whole world is mourning at his loss as the void he has left is unattainable but the God's masterpiece will be remembered as the climber of the tallest ever mountain in the world.
