Thanks to the ever growing demand for smartphones, new brands are getting decent opportunities to spread their network and set a strong foot in the market.
Following the league of many, it's now Gionee which is slowly and gradually expanding its smartphone collection in India. The best thing about Gionee is that unlike a few of Chinese smartphone brands, Gionee is not restricted to one price section.
Gionee's premium devices are covered under its 'S' series and the year 2016 started off with Gionee releasing the S6. The company recently unveiled its upgraded Gionee S6s smartphone claiming selfie flash as the major highlight of it. With this upgraded version, Gionee is aiming to target the younger lot which is more obsessed with selfies.
Let's see if the device will fulfill company's claim.
Look and feel
Gionee S6s has unibody design with its metal sides offering decent grip. The device weighs 166 grams, and appears little heavy. The device has 5.5-inch 2.5D curved display which has Corning Gorilla Glass. The device has Gold lining that runs all through the corners giving premium feel. At the back you will find the main camera with LED flash whereas fingerprint scanner is below the camera. Bottom panel has Micro-USB charging slot with 3.5mm audio jack. The device is available in two shades, Latte Gold and Mocha Gold. Display of the device is quite sharp and clear.
Specifications and software
It features 5.5-inch full-HD backed by 1080x1920 pixels IPS display and has Corning Gorilla Glass. It comes with dual-SIM that runs on Gionee's Amigo 3.2 based Android 6.0 Marshmallow. It comes clocked at 1.3GHz octa-core MediaTek MT6753 SoC, complimented with 3GB of RAM. As for camera, it comes with 13MP main camera which has Sony IMX258 sensor, an f/2.0 aperture, LED flash. For selfies it has 8MP fixed-focus camera with LED flash. Selfie camera has f/2.2 aperture, with 5P lens, and even favor flash support. It is equipped with 32GB internal storage and hybrid dual-SIM card slot.
Gionee S6s offers you different connectivity options including 4G, Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, 3.5mm headphone jack, and Micro-USB. It comes with 3150mAh non-removable battery, which under mix use lasts for 13 hours and 10 minutes.
Performance
The device doesn't pose any trouble for normal use. Playing games, watching videos, music player; everything works smoothly and causes no lag. The connectivity options all work fine and the voice quality is also clear.
Verdict
Gionee S6s is priced at Rs. 17,999, and at this budget price, the device surely makes for a fair buy. Also, its metallic design, premium look and striking features call for the device to be a good purchase for all who have been in search of a budget device with quality features.
However, the one thing that doesn't really work in favor of this device is the company's claim of this being an out-and-out selfie phone. The smartphone takes good selfies but under bright conditions, the images clicked under low light have the same resolutions that we see in any other device. So the claim that it's totally a selfie isn't fully justified.
Rounding up all the facts, one can say that currently the market is full of devices that are priced similar to that of Gionee S6s, and range in the 15,000 package with more or less the same features as Gionee S6s. The device is not justifying its current price because it has a tough competition to face from the rival devices, most of which are offering the same features under a lower price.
If Gionee cuts down the price, the device certainly has higher chances of getting sold and making a strong foothold in the market!
