Motorola has undoubtedly come a long way ever since the launch of its first generation Moto G in 2013. Over the years, it has worked a lot on improving key areas like design, built, quality as well as credibility.
So far it has sustained its image and has lived up to the expectations. But now it’s being test again for its fourth generation - Moto G4 and G4 Plus. Both the variants were released recently and are set to compete with the popular choices like Samsung Galaxy J7 (2016) and Lenovo ZUK Z1.
When Motorola had first unveiled the specifications of G4 Plus, it has certainly left us impressed. However, the real test will happen now as the smartphone is out in market and we have every detail about its functionality and performance.
So, let’s check out how the smartphone fares and whether it will survive the tough competition around.
Built & Design
It’s a slim device with unimposing silver plastic frame and a white rear panel. Its textured back panel does look good but it fails to give you a firm hold. On the right side of the device you’ll find the volume rocker and power button while micro USB port is placed at the bottom. At the top edge we’ve the 3.5mm audio jack. Moto G4 Plus is dual-SIM phone and has a 3,000mAh non-removable battery. The fingerprint sensor as sported by G4 Plus is extremely responsive.
Display
It has 5.5-inch Full HD display of 1,080x1,920 pixels resolution. The display is quite good and offer accurate color saturation which makes video watching a wonderful experience. The viewing angles are also pretty good. Its display is secluded with Corning Gorilla Glass 3. Above the display you’ll find the selfie camera, mono speaker, and sensors. Speaker's audio is pretty decent but certainly not as striking as second generation Moto G.
Performance & Camera
Moto G4 Plus is backed by octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 617 chipset paired with 3GB RAM. It runs the latest Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow and has 32GB of expandable internal storage up to 128GB through microSD card.
On a day to day use the smartphone handles different tasks very well. It gives you no problem while opening different apps or switching between them randomly. Gaming is also uncomplicated but it does get heated up post an hour or two of gaming.
It connects to 4G and offers better connectivity. It even connects to VoLTE, 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS.
Coming to camera, G4 Plus has 16MP primary camera and 5MP selfie camera but they don’t really are impressive as was expected. Low light images turn out to be very average and the laser focus is also very slow. If you’re looking for a superior quality camera – G4 Plus may not fit your bill.
Verdict
If you leave out a few things aside, like the camera, Moto G4 Plus is certainly a desirable handset. It has a decent design and the features too work well. In a bid to accommodate new features, Motorola has ditched its water-resistance feature along with a few others which were seen in the predecessors.
For a price of Rs 14,999, Moto G4 Plus is worth buying but we can’t rule out the availability of other budget phones which are in the same range and offer similar functionality like that of the G4 Plus. The Lenovo ZUK Z1 comes with more powerful Snapdragon 801 processor with 3GB RAM and is available at the same price of G4 Plus. Even 3GB/32GB model of Xiaomi Redmi Note is worth considering as it comes with a huge 4,000 mAh battery and the price is same.
Compare wisely and don’t just go for the look & feel – pick your option carefully!
