Announcing its latest smartphone - Gionee unveiled the S8 during an event in Barcelona at the Mobile World Congress. While unveiling the new handset, the company even showcased its new logo inspired by smiley emojis.
S8 is said to be the upgraded version of Gionee S7 that was released last year. The new handset is said to be more of a camera centric device. So here's what all it brings in store for you.
The Outer Appeal
Gionee S8 sports a metal body which happens to be non removable. The company calls it invisible antenna loop design, but when observed closely, one can see antenna strip running on its rear edge. There are no sharp corners around its edged. On its left panel you'll have card slot for dual SIM while volume, power and standby button are at the right. Towards the base it has speaker grills and on left, it incorporates USB Type C port in centre with 3.5mm audio jack.
On front, it offers 5.5-inch full HD display with bezels on the sides. The home button is at the base which also has fingerprint scanner section.
Display
It has a 5.5-inch AMOLED display which is backed by Corning Gorilla Glass 4 protection. S8 has a sharp display with deep blacks. There is also a 3D touch functionality which works quite like the one seen in Apple iPhone 6s and 6s Plus. For instance, if the camera icon is pressed for long, it gives the option to shoot selfies or videos.
Processor, Storage & Other Features
The Gionee S8 has MediaTek's Helio P10 which runs octa core processor clocked at 1.9GHz. It is further paired with a 4GB RAM and 64GB of storage. The S8 has microSD card slot that allows expanding storage up to 200GB. It has a hybrid dual SIM slot which backs VoLTE and dual 4G configuration. Other than this, it even offers Wi-fi 802.11ac, FM radio and Bluetooth 4.0 connectivty. It has a 3,000mAh battery and for now, we don't have any update about quick charging support.
Camera
As we mentioned earlier, this device is camera centric. It sports a 16MP primary camera with an RWB sensor and 8MP front camera. The primary camera has f/1.8 aperture with both laser AF and phase detect AF. The 8MP camera in the front comes with a 1/4 inch sensor size.
OS and Software
The Gionee S8 runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow in addition to its own Amigo 3.2 user interface. Gionee has stated that it has come up with various optimizations on the new-fangled alternate of Amigo skin. It will allow you to two WhatsApp apps for the two SIMs on the same phone. It also has a live locker feature, which would be known in detail only once the phone is out in market.
Conclusion
As for now, the all new Gionee S8 is available at nearly 449 Euros which in the Indian market would be priced approximately Rs. 34,000. However, we still are waiting for a final confirmation on the device's Indian price from Gionee's end.
The smartphone will soon hit the Indian market somewhere in June and unless we have a final word, we can assume the price to be nearly 35K inclusive of the taxes and duties.
How far the S8 would justify its price is something we will have to wait and watch for. The features it offers are commendable but the verdict can be out only when it's out in the market and we have a clear picture about its performance.
So, stay tuned as we bring to you the latest info about S8 and its performance!
