Set to compete with the likes of 5.5-inch phablets as released by Honor 5X, Le 1s and a few more, Gionee has come up with S6 in India at a price of Rs 19,999.
The smartphone features a 5.5-inch 720p HD AMOLED display, and is powered by Mediatek MT6753 processor. It runs on Android 5.1.1 Lollipop OS. The features and specifications as offered by Gionee S6 are quite similar like that of other mid-range smartphones. And it’s the price of Gionee S6 which is a glitch – it appears to be a bit overpriced for the features it offers.
Let us check out the features in detail and see how far the price justifies. Have a look:
The Look & Feel
If you look at the design and built, S6 hasn’t got anything new to offer. It has that typical appeal like the other China manufactured smartphones. Though its style looks pleasant but it gives you the feel of Honor 5X or Le 1s.
It is bar-shaped and has rounded edges. The front is completely subjugated by its display. The device also sports earpiece, a 5MP selfie camera along with the navigation keys. There is a non-removable back panel which has a 13MP primary camera with LED flash plus the old Gionee logo.
Volume and power buttons are on the right border and on left we’ve the cross microSD along with micro SIM card slot. It supports dual SIM, however; the problem is that it takes just one SIM card to be used alongside microSD card. The speaker and USB Type-C port are placed at bottom and at the top you’ll have the 3.5mm earphone jack. Though there is no special design but its aluminum body in Rose Gold color.
The display is sharp and vivacious. Viewing angles are also good. Though its display quality is good like that of other smartphones but given the price it comes for, the display should’ve been Full HD resolution.
Performance and Camera
Gionee S6 comes powered with a 1.3GHz octa-core Cortex-A53 Mediatek MT6753 processor and 3GB RAM. It offers 32GB of in-built memory and backs microSD cards up to 128GB.
At performance front, Gionee S6 is indeed a decent one. However, most of its apps take a while to open. It can be because of the heavy tailored UI. The smartphone is responsive to touch and you won’t find any major complaint in it.
Coming to its call quality, here also it scores well. It does warm up when used for playing games but that again doesn’t cause any problem to its performance.
As stated, it runs Android 5.1.1 Lollipop with Amigo OS 3.1. Its UI is extremely modified. Of all its features, it is the 3,150mAh battery which impresses the most. Even after watching videos, playing games and surfing apps, the battery can last for one day.
The 13MP camera provides good lighting, though the images appear a little over saturated but in all, they’re pretty decent. The front camera also offers 5MP which is also good for selfies. But if the light is low, images won’t clear. Its camera app provides you with various modes like beauty mode, Professional mode, panorama, PicNote, HDR and Smart scene.
Verdict
At most parts, the new Gionee S6 does offer a decent buy but if we look at the price then there are the likes of LeEco 1S and Huawei Honor 5X which give you same features for an extreme lesser price and performance wise also they are a better bid than S6.
If there would have been something in Gionee S6 that could justify its high price, we would have loved to declare it a clean winner from all aspects!
