The Prime Minister Narendra Modi meets today with the President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon. PM Modi warmly welcomed him and described Tajikistan as a valuable friend and strategic friend in Asia.
In the bilateral meet, India and Tajikistan signed four agreements, including one on exchange of financial intelligence, following delegation-level talks headed by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Tajikistan President Emomali Rahmon.
The External Afffairs Ministry spokesperson Vikas Swarup tweeted, “after the talks, the deliverables! PM @narendramodi and President Emomali Rahmon witness the exchange of agreements across multiple sectors.”
A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed on cooperation in the exchange of financial intelligence related to money laundering, related crimes and financing of terrorism.
The two sides signed a protocol amending avoidance of double taxation and prevention of fiscal evasion. Another MoU was signed regarding cooperation on broadcasting in exchange of audio-visual programmes. The two sides also initialed a document on bilateral investment.
According to press statement by the Prime Minister, “India’s membership of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization will be a valuable platform to work closely on regional security and counter-terrorism efforts with Tajikistan.”
According to the statement, “We agreed that peace, stability and prosperity in Afghanistan are important for the region. India and Tajikistan are joined in our steadfast support of the Afghan people and their aspirations for a peaceful and prosperous nation.”
According to statement, India and Tajikistan will do work on, “through reinforcing overall bilateral security cooperation; through greater training, capacity building and information exchanges; and, through active coordination in regional and multilateral contexts.”
