After demonetisation, people across the country are facing hardships in getting new currency from banks and ATMs whereas, some of the individuals were caught with bundles of new currency in a huge amount. Arising questions on this, the Former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram demands for investigation.
Over this issue, the Former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram on Tuesday demanded a Special Investigating Team to probe, how some individuals manage to get bundles of crores of rupees of new Rs 2000 currency notes while the masses struggle to withdraw their money.
The former Finance Minister Chidambaram said, “I can't get a Rs 2000 note, yet crores in Rs 2000 notes found their way to individuals being raided all over the country. The government has ordered the IT to investigate. It is a major crime and there must be a criminal investigation into this.”
The senior Congress leader termed demonetisation as “the biggest scam of the year” and demanded a thorough probe into it.
He asked about the calculations went behind the government’s decision to permit people to withdraw Rs 24,000 when the banks just don’t have sufficient amount of cash to dispense and the other people are forced to stand in long queues outside banks and ATMs all over the country.
Chidambaram also pointed the opinion of the former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and said that this move of government was a “monumental mismanagement.”
On November 24, Manmohan Singh termed demonetisation as Monumental Mismanagement while speaking in Rajya Sabha.
Pointing out at the government Chidambaram said, “Every bank is saying 'no cash'. So how does the government says there is cash? This is why Manmohan Singh said it is a monumental mismanagement.”
Chidambaram also said targeting the government for not providing enough cash to the district cooperative banks, “Keeping out district cooperative central banks is like punishing farmers. There is no money for them to buy supplies.”
He said, “Because of this the farmers are suffering today. There is no money with them to buy seeds, to hire labour or buy fertilizers.”
He also asked, “Why are district cooperative central banks kept out of this whole exercise?”
Chidambaram blamed government on demonetisation and asked that “who is going to compensate them”, after saying that about 45 crore people, who are dependent on daily wages have been affected by the November 8 announcement to demonetise Rs 500 and Rs 1000 old notes.
