60 per cent of death in India is caused by life-style diseases: Experts

A Public Lecture on 'Emergence of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD’s) in India and strategies to tackle them' was organized in Jamia Millia Islamia to disseminate information about diseases like Hypertension, Diabetes, Obesity, etc. that contribute to high-mortality rate in India.

The lecture was delivered by Prof. Mohd. Ashraf Ganie of Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi and Dr. R.K. Marwah who is Professor of Endocrinology and Metabolism at AIIMS. Prof. Mohd. Ashraf Ghani said that 60% of deaths in India were caused by life-style diseases.

Dr. R.K. Marwah, an eminent researcher, spoke on Vitamin-D deficiency and his current researches carried out in different educational institutions of India.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Talat Ahmad, Vice-Chancellor, Jamia Millia Islamia, said that the purpose of organizing such public lectures in Jamia Millia Islamia was to encourage inter-disciplinary dialogue and allow students an opportunity to listen to lectures by eminent speakers and from diverse domains of knowledge.

He expressed his intention of instituting Public Lectures to create an atmosphere of vibrant learning and interaction amongst the stakeholders on the campus. This free-wheeling interaction, he felt, will enable students to develop their awareness by generating greater sensitivity and a sense of social responsibility.

The event was very well attended by teachers, students and staff who had turned up to listen to the Public Lecture that directly related to their lives.
