Danger Dengue :Cases rise up to 1355, Walia reviewed meeting

Dr. A.K. Walia, Delhi Health & Family Welfare Minister has it has been observed that the relatives of the patients have to rush from one hospital to other in search of proper diagnosis and treatment. At present there are 34 government hospitals having 558 dedicated beds. Increase in number of beds in both government and private hospitals will provide much needed relief to the patients and lead to better management and care of dengue patients. Health Minister was reviewing the situation with regard to dengue in Delhi at a high level meeting attended by Director of Health Services with other officials.

Walia issued directions to increase the number of beds in government and private hospitals for dengue patients. He asked the Medical Superintendents of 34 government hospitals having dedicated beds for dengue cases to increase the number of dedicated beds for dengue cases by 10 each. He also impressed upon private hospitals to increase their dedicated beds for dengue cases by at least 5 beds each. He said that the number of dengue cases is rising and it is essential that no patient is denied diagnosis and treatment.

Dr. Walia also asked the Medical Superintendents to constitute Special Inquiry Committees in case of death of patient due to dengue. These Committees would meet frequently on regular basis to assess the handling of such cases. He said that it will enable the hospital administration to review their preparedness and management with regard to dengue. He directed that if these Committees find any shortcoming, it must be rectified immediately to put in place better dengue management system. He, however, cautioned that any lapse in patient care would be seriously viewed.

The Minister assured that the government will provide all support in terms of platelets supply, availability of staff, supply of medicines and other consumables. He said that necessary instructions have been issued to the Health Department to ensure their regular supply as per requirement.

According to the Health Minister was briefed that the total number of cases this year has gone upto 1355 as compared to 30 in 2012 and 176 in 2011. The number of cases reported in Delhi during this week alone was 889. Of these, 429 cases are reported from North Delhi Municipal Corporation, 215 from South Delhi Municipal Corporation and 189 from East Delhi Municipal Corporation, taking the number of cases to 833 in the jurisdiction of the three local bodies.
