Immediate steps required to prevent and Control Dengue :Dr. Walia

Dr. A.K. Walia, Delhi Health & Family Welfare Minister expressed concern that 89 cases of dengue have been reported in Delhi till date as compared to only 9 cases the last year during the corresponding period. He observed that very high density of mosquito breeding has been found during the last three months.

He said that it is alarming that very dense breeding has been found in the institutional areas especially within the premises of the institutes including centres of higher learning, technical and educational institutes, police stations, hospitals, government offices etc. He was reviewing the situation with regard to dengueand other vector borne diseases today in a meeting where Secretary, Health & FW, Director of Health Services, Medical Superintendents of the government and major private hospitals, Delhi Red Cross, Rotary Club, Lions Club as well as senior Delhi Government Health Officials, Medical Officer of Health, New Delhi Municipal Council and Municipal Health Officers & Dy. Health Officers of the three local bodies were present.

Dr. Walia informed that as per the data collected by the Directorate of National & Vector Borne Disease Control Programme for the survey from 20th to 22nd August, the container index breeding was as high as 65.4 in Sadh Nagar area in Palam, 15.2 in School of Planning & Architecture, 14.7 in Institute of Town Planning as well as in the Institute of Public Administration situated in ITO area and 10.8 in Fire Station, Moti Nagar.

The Health Minister observed that this year Den II – virus of dengue is in circulation which is more dangerous than the Den I and III. Until and unless all agencies and individuals are alert against creating mosquitogenic conditions, there is likely to be spurt in dengue cases.

The Health Minister directed the officials to adopt double-prong strategy in dealing with dengue. While on the one hand, efforts must be made to make people aware, while on the other hand, they must step up stringent penal action against the offenders. He directed the health officials of three municipalities to increase prosecution action especially in Narela and Rohini Zones where the number of dengue cases have respectively been reported 24 and 19 this year contributing to more than half of the number of cases
