Yesterday a 23rd ranked Sabine Lisicki of Germany did what now has become a trend in this year's Wimbledon. She ended the 34 match winning streak of World No.1 Serena Williams and showed her the exit gate.
Lisicki clinched a 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 victory over Williams in the fourth round. She will now play Estonia's Kaia Kanepi for a place in the last four.
Every known face in Tennis either has lost or has pulled out due to injury in last week or so in Wimbledon except for Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray and Agnieszka Radwanska.
Serena was the strongest contestant when Wimbledon started and after the exit of Second seed Victoria Azarenka and world number three Maria Sharapova, her win was sure. But now everything is uncertain and unpredictable in Wimbledon 2013.
In Men’s, Rafael Nadal who just won the French Open exited in the very first round against a not-so-famous opponent. Roger Federer, seven-time Wimbledon champion, was ousted in the second round.
This has been the first time since 1912 that no American is in quarter final of Wimbledon. This has been the first time in 5 years that no Federer or Nadal will be in semifinal. This is the first time that any Polish Tennis player will enter in the semifinal. This is also the first time that top seeders are not in the semifinals or finals.
It seems that all of a sudden all the Tennis greats decided to step away or make room for newcomers. It seems that an era dominated by Federer, Nadal, Sharapova and William’s sister is now at the end.
The hope remains with Djokovic, Murray and Radwanska that they will live up to their names.
