Indian Premier League (IPL) Chairman Rajeev Shukla, BCCI disciplinary committee head Arun Jaitley and Law Minister Kapil Sibal met on Friday to discuss a new and strong legislation to check fixing in sporting events.
Rajeev Shukla after the meeting said, "We need a law so that fixing in all sports could be controlled and eliminated".
"We want the law to be enacted as early as possible. We went to meet Kapil Sibal to discuss it," he said.
Shukla and Jaitely will soon meet Sports Minister Jitendra Singh.
"Sports minister also wants a strong law to be in place. So we will meet him as well to smoothen the passage of such a law," Shukla added.
Indian cricket has been thrown into disarray because of the IPL spot-fixing scandal, which led to the arrest of three players, including former Test player S Sreesanth, and several bookies with underworld connections.
The spot-fixing scandal is now grabbing around BCCI President N. Srinivasan son-in-law and Chennai Super Kings owner Gurunath Meiyappan.
On a question about whether Srinivasan should step down pending an inquiry against his son-in-law, the IPL chairman said, "The Ravi Sawani committee is investigating it. Let it submit a report, then the disciplinary committee will take a final decision on it."
Meanwhile, Mumbai Police today rejected Meiyappan's plea to give him time till Monday to appear before its crime branch for questioning with regard to his role in betting.
