A recent study has revealed that intake of vitamin D help muscles work efficiently and boosts the energy level of the body. The study was led by an Indian-origin researcher from Newcastle University.
Dr Akash Sinha, who headed the research shown that, muscular function enhances with Vitamin D supplements, which are thought to stimulate the activity of the mitochondria, the batteries of the cell.
A hormone, which is usually produced in the skin of the body, Vitamin D can be sourced in some food also that includes fish, fish liver oils, egg yolks and fortified cereals but it can also be effectively boosted with Vitamin D supplements.
According to a statistics about 60 percent of people in the UK suffer with the deficiency of vitamin D among which children under five, people with dark skin and the elderly being more susceptible.
Vitamin D plays an important role in bone formation lacking which can lead to rickets. Moreover, its role in other health issues is just emerging.
The researchers during the study used non-invasive magnetic resonance scans to measure the response to exercise in 12 patients suffering with severe deficiency before and after treatment with vitamin D.
"The scans provided a unique window into what is really going on in the muscle as it works,” said Dr Sinha, who also works within the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
"Examining this small group of patients with vitamin D deficiency who experienced symptoms of muscle fatigue, we found that those with very low vitamin D levels improved their muscle efficiency significantly when their vitamin D levels were improved," he added.
In addition to poor bone health, muscle fatigue is a common symptom in vitamin D deficient patients.
This fatigue could be a result of reduced efficiency of the mitochondria, which is also called the "power stations" found within each cell of the body.
