The Lahore High Court has appointed an amicus curie (it's literary meaning means friend of a court in latin. Amicus Curie is not the part of the case but appointed for assisting the court) for assistance on a petition of Jamatud Dawa chief Hafiz Saeed, who has asked the government to defend his case before a US court which had summoned him and former ISI chief Ahmed Shuja Pasha along with other officials on a law suit filed by relatives of US nationals killed in Mumbai attacks.
The son of slain US nationals, Rabbi Gabriel Noah Holtzberg and his wife Rivka, who were killed the in 2008 Mumbai attacks, has filed claims along with others against Hafiz Saeed; banned outfit Lashkar-e-Tayyaba (LeT); two former chiefs of ISI, Nadeem Taj and Ahmed Shuja Pasha; and two other people who it alleges were part of the ISI, Major Iqbal and Major Sameer Ali, reports The Nation.
For each of the claims, the plaintiffs have sought damages of 75,000 US dollars.
Saeed stated in his petition that he was the head of a charitable organisation, and had no links with the LeT.
Saeed stated that he is a citizen of Pakistan, who is entitled to the same rights as any other citizen of the country. Therefore, the government should be directed to defend him before US court in the same manner as former ISI officials were being protected, Saeed said.
