Maoists on Thursday morning released Biju Janta Dal (BJD) legislator Jhina Hikaka in the Odisha's Koraput district after holding him captive for more than a month.

According to media reports, he was released to a strange place in Koraput district in early morning from where he came with a group of villagers to a mango garden at Balipeta at about 10.30 a.m..

He was looking healthy and unhurt, reports said.

Emotions ran high when the 37-year-old MLA, wearing a green kurta, hugged his wife Kaushalya and seconds after both broke down in tears.

"We're glad that he is safe and unharmed," party colleague Baijayant Panda told reporters.

The Maoists, who kidnapped Hikaka from Laxmipur in Koraput March 24, had Wednesday announced that a 'praja', people's, court decided to release him after he apologised to the rebels and the local villagers.

Media reports also added that he was treated nicely by Maoists and government has not done adequate efforts to get him released, as he was a tribal.

He also added, he would raise the demand of Maoists in the assembly and if fails to fulfill their demands, he would resign from his from the assembly and the primary membership of the ruling BJD, reports added.
