Indian lawn tennis super star Leander Paes have created another history for India by securing the 50th double title with the victory of doubles final of the Sony Ericsson Open tournament on Saturday.
Paes along with his Czech partner Radek Stepanek defeated the second seeded Belarusian-Canadian combine of Max Mirnyi and Daniel Nestor by 3-6, 6-1, 10-8 after loosing the first set.
The winning duo had seventh seeded.
They took one hour and 22 minutes for winning the title.
Earlier, after loosing the first set, Paes and Stepanek broke Mirnyi and Nestor twice in the second set to force a tie-break. The Indian-Czech tandem trailed 1-4 before winning six straight points to surge ahead. Stepanek closed out the victory with an unreturnable volley.
Paes who had already won this title two times with Lukas Dlouhy in 2010 and Mahesh Bhupathi in 2011, have become the 24th player in ATP World Tour history to win 50 doubles titles.
"It's really, really special. 50 tournaments takes a little doing. 600 matches takes a little bit of doing. Having done a three titles in Miami is awesome. Next year, I hope to win another one," said Paes.
This victory of Paes will boost the moral of Indian veteran player for the upcoming London Olympic, where he is a strong candidate.
