5-Yr Jail to Bibi Jagir Kaur

A special CBI court in Patiala on Friday sentenced five years rigorous imprisonment to Punjab Minister and former Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) President Bibi Jagir Kaur for hatching conspiracy in her daughter's abduction and forcible abortion, but acquitted from Harpreet (Jagir's daughter) murder case.

The court found Jagir Kaur guilty for forcing her daughter Harpreet Kaur to forcibly undergo an abortion and sentenced a five-year jail for her.

However, the court dropped the case of murder levelled against her.

She was convicted under section 120-B (criminal conspiracy) read with 313 (forcible abortion - causing miscarriage without woman's consent), 344 (wrongful confinement of more than 10 days) and 365 (kidnapping or abduction with intent secretly and wrongfully to confine a person).

The Court also sentenced Kaur three years imprisonment and a fine of Rs.3000 for abducting her daughter and one year imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 2,000 for criminal conspiracy. All the sentenced would run co-currently.

Harpreet Kaur had died under mysterious circumstances in April 2000.

The case has seen several witnesses turning hostile. Even the complainant Kamaljit Singh, who claimed to be husband of Harpreet and father of her still-born child, turned hostile once, but later he re-affirmed the case.

The trial of this case was ended on March 18, 2012.
