There are various types of ayurvedic massage mentioned in the ancient texts of Ayurveda that are selected according to the need, nature and disease of the patient. Some of the ayurvedic massage is udvarthana, mardana and paadaghata.

Massage has several physical and psychological benefits. Some of the major benefits of massage therapy are:

  • While one undergoes massage, the blood circulation in tissues increases and releases muscle spasms that stimulates the nervous system. In addition to that the tissues get more oxygen and nutrients when the blood circulation increases.
  • The healing time of illness or injury becomes less.
  • Endorphins, the natural pain killers of the body are released in the body due to massage.
  • The lymphatic system responsible for providing immunity to the body is enhanced due to massage.
  • Muscle tension, stiffness, pain and swelling are reduced by massage.
  • Regular massage reduces the formation of scar tissue in the body.
  • Problem related to stress such as migraine, tension headache, body pain, tiredness, anxiety, depression, insomnia, sleep disturbance etc. are reduced with the help of massage. In addition to that it also reduces the level of stress hormone “cortisol” in the body.
  • It stimulates a sense of creativity in thinking of a person and promotes the feeling of well-being.

But there are certain points that should be kept in mind while going for a massage as if you are suffering from fever, diarrhea, vomiting, indigestion and pregnancy, then massage should not be done. In addition to that massage therapy is not recommended in case of skin eruptions, large bruises, inflamed joints, sensitive veins, varicose, tumors, a period, indigestion, nut allergy, appendix, dislocated shoulders, and vertebral problems.

Moreover, it is advisable to go for a therapist before going for a massage.
