General Singh withdraws his plea against gov. over age row

New Delhi, Fri, 10 Feb 2012 NI Wire

Indian Army chief General V K Singh today withdrew his petition which he has filled against government seeking his honour and integrity before the government due to occurring age controversy.

General Singh was claiming that his actual Date of Birth (DoB) is 10th May 1951 which is also marked in his Matriculation certificate while in government's record, it is registered as 10th May 1950.

So he had filled a plea regarding to correct his DoB in government's record.

General's step came after Supreme Court's decision in which the apex court today rejected the General's plea stating that General should honour the record registered in UPSC, Indian Military Academy and National Defence Academy.

SC also asked the army chief to honour his letters of 2008 and 2009 accepting 1950 as his birth year.

A bench of Justice RM Lodha and Justice HL Gokhale asked General to withdraw his petition challenging the government order to set his DoB as 10th May 1950 or it will be forced to dump it.

The Court also recalled to General Singh that if there was any error regarding his DoB in government's record, it was his duty to make it correct earlier, as all his promotion and job appreciation were held considering his DoB as 1950 not 1951.

The discrepancy was pointed out by the Military Secretary's branch in 2006 when Gen. Singh was being considered for promotion as corps commander.

Since then, all his promotions, including as army commander in 2008 and army chief in 2010, were made on the basis that he was born in 1950.

General Singh's retire is scheduled in May 2012 on the basis of his DoB at 10th May 1950.
