3 State Department officials resign amid damning Libyan US consulate attack report

Washington, Thu, 20 Dec 2012 ANI

Washington, Dec 20 (ANI): Three US State Department officials, including a security chief, have resigned in the wake of the release of scathing report about safety lapses at the U.S. Consulate in the Libyan city of Benghazi.

Eric Boswell, the assistant secretary of state for diplomatic security, and Charlene Lamb, the deputy assistant secretary responsible for embassy security, stepped down under pressure after the release of the report on Tuesday.

According to the administration officials, the third official purportedly worked for the Bureau of Near East Affairs, but was not immediately identified, Fox News reports.

The State Department-ordered investigation of the September 11 attack on the consulate in Benghazi, that claimed 4 lives, concluded that "systemic failures" left the facility inadequately protected.

According to the report, the independent review board's report also confirmed that no protest preceded the deadly attack, as the US government first told the public. (ANI)
