Born on 16 October 1948 in a Tamil Iyengar family, Hema was a shy girl at start. None had the idea that this girl would become the "Dream Girl" of millions in coming years.
Born to V.S. Ramanujam Chakravarthy and Jaya Chakravarthy, Malini was the youngest of the three children.
At the age of 20, Hema made her debut with Sapno Ka Saudagar in the year 1968. From the very first film she was projected as the dream girl.
With its release, she never looked back. In 1970 came Jhonny Mera Naam with Dev Anand, Andaz in 1971 and others.
Double role in Seeta Geeta with Dharmendra and Sanjeev Kapoor changed everything. She played a leading role in the film and shared screens with two big stars. Just four years in industry, she won Filmfare Award for Best Actress in 1972.
After this, Hema gave hits after hits like: Gora Aur Kala, Prem Parvat, Amir Garib, Sanyasi, Dharmatma, Mehbooba, Dream Girl, Dhoop Chhaon, Trishul, The Burning Train, Do Aur Do Paanch and Kudrat.
Hema shared screen with all the leading actors of 70s and 80s including Dharmendra, Sanjeev Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan, Jeetendra and others.
Sholay (1975) changed her fortune more personally then professionally. She fell in love with Dharmendra whom she will finally marry in 1980. After this film she went on to work with Dharmendra in 28 films, most of them were hits. There pair was loved.
Dharmendra and Hema had to convert to Islam before marrying as he was already married to Prakash Kaur who refused to divorce him.
Even after marriage she worked in Bollywood films and gave hits like Kranti, Naseeb, Satte Pe Satta, Alibaba Aur 40 Chor and Razia Sultan.
Hema has worked in over 150 films in 40 years of her Bollywood career. She is noted for her comic and dramatic roles and her classical dancing.
Dharmendra and Hema have two daughters: Esha Deol who recently married industrialist Bharat Takhtani and Ahana Deol. Hema is stepmother of Sunny Deol and Abhay Deol.
In 2000 she was awarded Padma Shri and Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2012, the Sir Padampat Singhania University presented her an Honorary Doctorate in recognition of her contribution to Indian cinema.
She was also the Chairperson of National Film Development Corporation. From 2003-2009, Hema was nominated as Rajya Sabha member by Bharatiya Janata Party.
