Google to unify its privacy policy from March 01

New Delhi, Wed, 25 Jan 2012 NI Wire

Google Inc. is going to change its privacy policies from 01st March in order to serve more personalized search results and advertisements, said Google on Tuesday in a blog.

According to google, the new privacy policies of Google's 60 services including web search, Gmail, Google+ and YouTube will be combined into one and users would not need to read privacy policies of its each services.

"We're rolling out a new main privacy policy that covers the majority of our products and explains what information we collect, and how we use it, in a much more readable way," Alma Whitten, Google's director of privacy, product and engineering, said in a blog post.

"We believe this new, simpler policy will make it easier for people to understand our privacy practices as well as enable Google to improve the services we offer," she said.

This change will affect to those who have accounts in Google, means until you logged out from any of google's services, you will continue to get information from all of the google's services which you have earlier used and switched to new service.

"If you're signed in, we may combine information you've provided from one service with information from other services. In short, we'll treat you as a single user across all our products, which will mean a simpler, more intuitive Google experience," added Whitten.

Giving the reason behind its policy change, google explained that there were huge demand of concise, simpler and shorter privacy policies from the users and regulators across the world.

But, internet professionals and web market experts believe that this move of google came after facing criticism to google for involuntarily revealing users' most e-mailed contacts to other participants through its previous social networking tool Google Buzz.

For this, Google had to go for a settlement last year with the Federal Trade Commission for preventing Google from misrepresenting users’ personal information and sharing their data without their approval.

Moreover, Google is also eyeing to slow down the speed of its social networking rival facebook through making changes its privacy policies.

Google's previous social networking platform google buzz has been shut down because of not getting success, however, google's new social networking service google+ is gaining popularity and through this service, google wants to give close competition to facebook.

The changes in google's private policy will also influence, google's advertisement and marketing service, as users will still see the advertisement what they have searched earlier in previous service despite changing the service from one to another.

These, advertisement will come from google's search history database, market experts believe.

Regarding the new change in private policies, google stated, it would inform its users by showing it on its home page before beginning the service.
