Mubarak's sons stand trial in stock manipulation case

Cairo , Mon, 09 Jul 2012 ANI

Cairo, July 9 (Xinhua-ANI): Egypt's South Cairo Court on Monday started the trial of former President Hosni Mubarak's sons, Gamal and Alaa, over stock manipulation.

The prosecution accused both Alaa and Gamal and other seven defendants of embezzling huge amounts of money from selling the Egyptian National Bank and controlling its shares in the stock- exchange.

The civil plaintiffs asked for compensation from the defendants while the defendants demanded an adequate amount of time to study the case.

Gamal and Alaa' lawyer Fareed al-Deeb asked the court to release them on bail pending trial.

Alaa and Gamal were acquitted on June 2 in a land deal case, as the charges had passed the period of 10 years for legal action.

Mubarak and his former Interior Minster Habib al-Adli were sentenced to life terms for charges of failing to stop the killing of protesters in the demonstration last year.

The 84-year-old former president is now being treated in a military hospital in southern Cairo after serving 17 days in Tora Prison. (Xinhua-ANI)
