London, May 2(ANI): Newly appointed England manager Roy Hodgson has confessed he never expected or thought that he was the fans' choice to become England manager.
Tottenham Hotspurs manager Harry Redknapp was the popular choice for the job, but Hodgson has promised to win over the supporters after taking charge of England on a four-year contract worth three million poundS-a-year.
"I'd have to be on another planet not to be aware of that situation," The Daily Mirror quoted Hodgson, as saying.
Hodgson said there is one similarity his England appointment and his tumultuous reign at Liverpool, which started with a bad reaction from supporters who wanted to see club legend Kenny Dalglish back in charge.
"There is one major difference between my time at Liverpool and being offered the job as England manager: The people at Liverpool who appointed me didn't have a chance to stay very long and others took over the club," Hodgson said. The FA had a lot of time to decide which candidate they wanted to do the job, and I'm happy it was me. The fact is it's important for everyone in the country to get behind the team. I'm rather hoping everyone will get behind me and give us the chance of the success we would like," he added.
"Perhaps, it's always going to be difficult to know you've got everyone behind you when you're given the opportunity to take a job, but the people behind me are those who have entrusted me with the position," he said. (ANI)
