New Delhi/ Kolkata, May 1(ANI): Railway Minister Mukul Roy on Tuesday extended his best wishes to the 14-lakh strong Indian Railways employees network on the occasion of May Day.
In a statement, Roy thanked workers of the over 150-year old organisation in making it "a true Lifeline of the Nation" and expressed solidarity with the cause of workers everywhere.
"Each railway person toils day and night, round the year, for ensuring uninterrupted railway operations. I salute their commitment and contribution towards the nation," Roy said.
Roy pledged to ensure "better social security and a congenial working environment" for railway employees.
"I take this opportunity to reiterate my commitment to the welfare of this vast Railway system, and will continue to work towards providing better social security and congenial working environment for every member of the Railway family," he said.
Labour Day was observed in India for the first time in Chennai in 1923.
Several trade unions and CPI (M) members participated in May Day celebrations in Kolkata earlier today.
This year's Labour Day assumes greater significance in the light of various international labour rights' movements that took place over the last year, including the Occupy Wall Street movement in the United States.(ANI)
