PM expresses grief over Assam ferry tragedy

New Delhi, April 30 (IANS) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Monday expressed grief over the boat tragedy in Assam's Dhubri district in which many people have died.

 

"The prime minister is shocked and grieved to know about the loss of lives in a boat tragedy on the Brahmaputra river in Assam," said an official release.

 

The prime minister spoke to Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi to convey his condolences and expressed solidarity with the people of the northeastern state.

 

A ferry capsized in the Brahmaputra river in Dhubri district Monday evening. There were over 200 people on the ferry when it was caught up in a heavy storm.

 

While some people were rescued by locals, most were still missing.

 

The prime minister is a Rajya Sabha MP from Assam.
