Oz players to wear suits from sheep grazing on Sydney Cricket Ground turf

Melbourne , Thu, 26 Apr 2012 ANI

Melbourne, Apr 26 (ANI): The hallowed turf of the Sydney Cricket Ground, which has hosted many famous and infamous tests, now has a more challenging task at hand - feeding sheep that will produce wool to make the Australian cricket team's new uniforms.

A small portion of the SCG's couch and rye grass has been lifted from the ground and regrown in the grazing paddocks of Bill Mitchell, at Guyra in the New England region, as part of the wool marketing program Grazed on Greatness.

The sheep now feeding on that elite grass will be shorn in September and the clip sent to Italy, where it will be made into uniforms by menswear label MJ Bale, official clothier to the Australian cricket team.

Mitchell said consumers increasingly wanted to know where their food and fibre came from and this program helped do that.

"Wool is a clean and green natural fibre grown in paddocks free from chemicals," the Daily telegraph quoted him as saying.

"This country rode on the sheep's back and to be able to continue promoting what shaped the nation is a great thing," he said.

MJ Bale owner Matt Jensen said the program highlighted the steps from paddock to garment.

"We are changing the way in which wool is perceived and putting in it an engaging way," Jensen said.

The Australian cricket team will get their suits before the season starts this summer. (ANI)
